Series One, Game One: 3/30/07: Bugs 1, Thunder 5

First off, let me send my deepest condolences to the family of Harold Woodruff. Whenever there was any kind of Mudbugs activity, Mr. Woodruff was there. He even came to the Hockey 101 for Women nights. His passing obviously will leave our Mudbugs with very heavy hearts. I hope his family will be comforted by the knowledge that he was truly loved and admired by many, many people.

I only had two worries about going into last night's game: an overall lack of playoff experience and overconfidence. I think I worried a little too loudly because somebody heard me: the Thunder.

There are so many young players on our Bugs' team who haven't been to "the dance" before, not really felt the difference in the pressure to perform well. And last night they got a Wicked Witch of a lesson from Wichita. The Thunder came to win; I'm not sure my Bugs even came to play. It was quite painful to look up at the scoreboard at the end of the first period and see 3-0 tally.

From missed passes to misread feeds to sloppy stickwork to poor defense to shaky goaltending, if it could go wrong, it did. Players losing their edges and sending themselves down to the ice basically summed up the night: Murphy's Law, laughing all night, seemed to have parked itself firmly on the home team. Not since late November, early December have we seen such an unconnected effort from this team.

The Thunder came out firing on all cylinders from the get-go, and the better team won. They used their powerplays wisely and made the Bugs pay early. Horrell is a HUGE find for Wichita. However, the way their defense played around their own net is to be commended as well. The Bugs were stifled from every angle and just couldn't solve the Thunder rookie. The Thunder were also tremendously physical in this game, whereas the Bugs were not. Coach French did a great job prepping his team for last night's game.

Disappointed in our Bugs' effort? Oh yea. Am I worried? No. Because I know what this Mudbug team can and will do. Do or do not, boys. There is no try. Time to throw a big bucket o' water on the Wicked Witch.
