A new season is upon us
Ah, we’re finally on the eve of the official beginning of the autumnal season. Corn stalks, fat pumpkins, blazing leaves, harvest moons, and for a choice group of us, HOCKEY.
I was a bit worried that my blog credentials had gone the way of Britney Spears’s career since I hadn’t posted since May. But, voila, I’m still in the mix of things.
I’ve held off writing anything as I wanted to wait until there were several great things to comment on about the Mudbugs. (Plus, since I’m an English teacher, I’ve been up to my elbows in an amount of paperwork that would make a Federal tax auditor proud.)
Steve Cherwonak came on board this summer as the new GM for the Mudbugs. Yes, that guy. The guy who was the recipient of tons of complaining emails from fans all over the CHL. The guy who probably cringed every time he saw the word “Mudbugs” in an email subject header. But he’s also one of the guys who helped start off the Mudbugs organization way back in 1997. So it’s like a family reunion of sorts. And after meeting Steve in person (I confess, I sent him one email, that’s all), he’s as gregarious and eager about Mudbugs hockey as any Bugs fan I’ve ever met. He’s also pretty good at putting together furniture, or so I’ve been told. He told us he can’t wait to be a fan again and cheer for his team.
Travis Huntington comes on board as our new Media Relations/Radio Broadcaster. Travis also worked in “enemy territory” last year as a color man for the Colorado Eagles. (Boy, do I have some questions for Travis…..) Justin Scholtes told me that Travis is bright and enthusiastic and is thrilled to be here. And knowing Sholtsey like I do, we’ve got another great broadcaster who’ll bring listening Bugs’ fans to the brink of heart failure once again this season.
As of today, we’ve got eleven (yes, you read that right) players who’ve officially signed to be Mudbugs. Chris Brassard was named team captain this past Thursday evening at the Mudbug Nation's Town Hall meeting, along with Quade Lightbody and Jason Basile being named as alternate captains. These three players epitomize the Mudbugs Hardest Working Team moniker. Smitty and Lupul both returning is awesome (and I know some puck bunnies who were sent to heaven with those announcements, hee), along with DeCaro, Ori, Lightbody, and Zirnis. Tyrel Lucas comes back after spending time as one of our amateur players during the playoffs. If this kid’s shot is as great as it was last spring, we’re in for a real treat. Jake Ortmeyer looks to be a huge (literally and figuratively) addition to the team as does Darryl Lloyd, who was one dangerous Laredo players two seasons ago…which means he’ll be an awesome Mudbug!
Some folks complain about the lack of announcements concerning signed players during the off-season, but I understand Coach’s reasons. He’s always put together a stellar team, and I expect this season to be no different. Can the Bugs do it without Wildfong? That remains to be seen. But our favorite pest is putting together a pretty feisty team of his own out West and the I-20 rivalry will certainly be at the forefront of a lot of fans’ minds. I love Dan, and I wish Forbes and him much success, but I do prefer my North Richland Hills’ Burgers to be well done.
